CURRICULUM VITAE

Research interests: histology-citology, ultrastructural citology, cell biology, intracellular mechanisms of synthesis and secretory processes, intracellular mechanism action of some bioactive substances and drugs.

Education: PhD in Biology (1976), Babes-Bolyai University; 2002: training in 'Strategy of Multiple Users Research Base', organised by CNCSIS in Poiana Brasov; 2001: Training in 'The Marketing of Multiple Users Research Base', organised by CNCSIS in Poiana Brasov (Romania); 1998: Course in Electron Microscopy via the Internet, Cancun, Mexic; 1998: Course in Quantitative High Resolution Electron Microscopy, Cancun, Mexic; 1986: International course on 'Biomembranes and Diseases', organised by ICRA and FEBS, Cluj-Napoca.

Employment: Professor and Senior Researcher at the Babes-Bolyai University's Department of Biology; Head of the Experimental Biology Group; Director of the Electron Microscopy Center; Director of the Cell and Molecular Biology Center. Associated Professor with the Medical Faculty of Oradea University (1993-2000) and the Medical Faculty of Vasile Goldis University in Arad (1997-2003).

Teaching: lectures in 'Cell and Molecular Biology', 'Histology' (undergraduate level), 'Cell Biology and Molecular Biotechnologies' and 'Cellular Biotransformants' (postgraduate level); electron microscopy (doctoral school); supervising doctoral research in Cell Biology (15 PhD candidates).

Awards, grants and recognition: Gold Medal at the 51st World Exhibition of Innovation, Research, and New Technology, Bruxelles, EUREKA 2002; Romanian Academy Award (2001); Maya and Nicolae Simionescu Award (2003); Doctor Honoris Causa of 'Vasile Goldis' University, Arad, Romania; 7 invention patents; 139 scientific contracts and grants; Collaboration with London's 'Scientific, Environmental & Educational Collaboration with Romania' (affiliated with the 'Society of Electron Microscope Technology') resulting in a $ 55000 contribution in scientific equipments.

Scientific Activity (Publications): 372 scientific papers published in Romania and abroad: 276 in English, 96 in Romanian; 80 in international journals and volumes (39 in I.S.I, journals); 3 chapters published in an International Handbook and Monograph books (McGraw Hill - New York and Springer Verlag); 7 invention patents; 8 university books; 9 edited scientific books; a book with experimental scientific data; 139 scientific contracts and grants, as director (one of them with the aid of World Bank, 475.000 USD); My work has focused primarily on cellular structure-function, e.g.: the description of the secretory cycle in glandular cells of deferens vas from isopods and evolution and role of Golgi Complex in the secretory process; evidentiation of biomembrane regeneration in hepatocytes of rat alcohol intoxicated liver after treatment of hepatoprotector drug; dicovery of some cells in the gut of moules which produce insuline-like and glucagone-like substances, with extraction possibilities and use in medicine; discovery of antraquinonic substances with cytostatic properties and of the mechanism of their killing action on tumour cells (3 patent); discovery of a new cellular formation, Eracosome, in glandular cells of an crustacean, specialised for secretary product depositing; contribution to description of the ultrastructure and function of NAB-corpuscule in plant cells; ultrastructural description of pathogenetic mechanism action of Helicobacter felis in cat gastric mucosa; ultrastructural evidentiation and description of the mechanism action at liver and kidney level in rat poisoned with cyanobacterial toxins.
